Johannesburg Harriers Athletic Club

The Year was 1904. The smoke and dust of the South African War still hung thickly in the air. The atmosphere of the gold rush-days was evident everywhere as the Dutch and British settlers jostled each other in their feverish activities in the streets of Johannesburg.

Already the gold-hungry people of the booming town were taking a civic pride in the luxuriousness of the multi-storied Carlton Hotel and it was here within it's walls and along it's corridors that deals were struck and fortunes made.
